History of military ranks. I have come across 18th and 19th century military ranks making a distinction between "character" of a rank and real rank. I have found that both for the Danish and the Austrian army ("Charakter eines Oberst" and "Wirklicher Oberst"). I found numerous examples for the use but no definition or closer explanation.
