Cadet Officer School is patterned after the USAF Squadron Officer School. The course is divided between lecture, seminar, and hands-on training. Instructors, both Civil Air Patrol and military, guide cadets through the Air Force's approach to the psychology of leadership, problem solving, effective writing, speaking, and group dynamics.

Cadets driving themselves or parents driving with military ID can arrive directly at the lodging area (450 North LeMay Plaza, Maxwell AFB, AL 36112). All others without base access will be met at the Visitor's Center and shuttled to lodging. Cadets will turn in their vehicle keys at check-in. CAP cadets are not permitted to drive while at COS.
